An unrivalled tradition

Since 1948, the Mercurio family has been bringing the magic of puppet theatre to the squares of Italy. A story spanning three generations, built on passion, innovation and respect for an art that risks disappearing. Discover how it all began and how we have carried it forward to this day.

Our Story

The History of the Mercurio Puppet Theatre: From Its Origins to Today

There is an invisible thread connecting every puppet, every show, every laugh from the audience to one extraordinary man: Ciro Mercurio. Not a simple puppeteer, but a visionary capable of transforming an ancient art into an immersive experience — a journey into the heart of Neapolitan popular culture that still leaves its mark today. It was Ciro who understood that puppet theatre could be something greater than a solitary craft. He involved the family, united the generations, and from that spark the National Puppet Theatre of the Mercurio Brothers was born — a collective project built on enthusiasm, teamwork and a shared passion that absorbed us from adolescence, carrying the Neapolitan tradition to every corner of Italy.

Today that story continues. Every show is an act of love for our roots — a living piece of culture that refuses to stay in books, but wants to take to the stage and go straight to the heart of the audience.

The Second Generation

Antonino Mercurio: A Legacy That Lives On!

Later, I, Antonino Mercurio, decided to take up the reins of the art that my father had so masterfully created and carried forward. It was not simply a matter of continuing a tradition, but of renewing it, enriching it and taking it to new heights. Under my guidance, inventiveness and imaginative creativity, in a relatively short space of time, the puppet theatre was not only reappraised but achieved remarkable milestones — both in human terms and in artistic reputation.

This allowed the craft and the tradition itself to be enriched with a new national dignity. I have not made it merely a solitary profession: like my father, I have managed to transform it into a shared family passion — one that I hope will continue in the generations to come.
